Privacy Policy

1. Overview

We design our apps to collect only the information necessary to operate licensing and trial functionality. Unfold runs locally on your Mac and does not track usage activity or file contents.

This policy applies to the direct download version of Unfold unless otherwise stated.

This policy explains what information we collect and how it is used.

2. Information we collect

A. Device identifier & trial information

To manage trial access and license validation, Unfold generates a random UUID on first launch.

We store:

  • A randomly generated device ID (UUID)
  • The device name (as set on your Mac)
  • Trial status information
  • License activation status (if applicable)

The generated device ID:

  • Is created by the app
  • Is not derived from hardware serial numbers
  • Is not linked to your Apple ID
  • Is not used for cross-app or cross-service tracking

The device name is stored solely to help identify activated devices within a license, for example when a license supports multiple devices.

This information is used only for license enforcement and preventing abuse of trial limits.

B. Information you provide

If you contact us for support, we receive the information you choose to share, such as your name and email address.

C. Payments

If you purchase a license:

  • Payments are processed securely by Polar
  • We do not store credit card details
  • Polar may collect billing information necessary to process your purchase

D. Feature requests

If you submit feedback through our public feature board:

  • Your account information and submitted content are stored, such as your name and email address, and any messages put onto the board

3. What we do not collect

We do not collect:

  • Usage analytics
  • File contents
  • Behavioral tracking data
  • Advertising identifiers
  • Background activity monitoring

We do not monitor which files you preview.

4. How we use information

We use collected information solely to:

  • Enforce trial limits
  • Validate licenses
  • Display activated devices under a license
  • Respond to support inquiries

We do not sell personal information.
We do not use your data for advertising.

5. Data sharing

We share information only when necessary to:

  • Process payments through Polar
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not share personal data with advertisers or data brokers.

6. Data retention

Device identifiers and license information are retained as long as necessary to maintain license validity and prevent abuse.

Support communications are retained only as long as necessary for business or legal purposes.

7. Your rights

You may request access to or deletion of your personal data by contacting [email protected].

8. Changes to this policy

If our data practices change, we will update this Privacy Policy and revise the effective date.

9. Mac App Store version

If you download Unfold from the Mac App Store, licensing and payments are handled by Apple.

In this version of the app:

  • Purchases are processed through your Apple ID
  • We do not generate or store our own device identifiers for licensing
  • We do not manage trial or license validation through our own systems
  • We do not use third-party payment providers such as Polar
  • We do not use external update mechanisms such as Sparkle

Apple may collect and process information as part of App Store purchases and downloads. This is handled according to Apple's own privacy policies and is not controlled by us.

Unfold continues to run locally on your Mac and does not collect file contents or usage data in the App Store version.
